The shooting of an unarmed black man by a police officer in the Bronx on Friday, which prompted widespread outrage, has stoked fears of a wave of police shootings across the country.
The incident in the neighborhood of East Harlem was captured on video, and a police source said a suspect had been detained.
Police said they were looking into whether the shooting was racially motivated, and the man is white.
“We can’t wait to get to the bottom of this, but it does not help anyone to keep these things quiet,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Saturday.

It’s been a very difficult and distressing time for the people of East New York.”

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, right, and New York Police Commissioner William Bratton address a news conference at the police station in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday in New York.
The shooting, which was captured by video, was one of several protests over the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a white police officer last week in Ferguson, Missouri.
Brown, who had a gun, was shot four times by Officer Darren Wilson, a black officer, in August 2014.
In August, the grand jury in Ferguson refused to indict Wilson.
Demonstrators gathered in the streets of New York on Saturday to demand answers about the shooting.
Police in the city said they had responded to protests over Wilson’s shooting, and some demonstrators chanted “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “black lives matter”.
New York City Police Commissioner Bratton said the officers involved in the shooting were on “administrative leave” and that they were being treated in custody.
He said that while he believed the shooting of Brown was racially driven, it was not a justification for violence.
“If we believe the suspect is responsible, we will be taking immediate steps to ensure he is held accountable, and we will do so with the full force of the law,” Bratton told reporters.
“But I do not believe that it is in any way, shape or form a justification to attack an individual who was in the process of peacefully exercising his constitutional rights and rights as a citizen of this country.”
In New York, protesters held a peaceful rally on Saturday near the headquarters of the state’s attorney general.
The demonstration drew about a dozen people.
Police officers in riot gear moved in to disperse the crowd.
“I don’t think we should be scared,” said Donta Davis, a protester.
“If we were scared, we wouldn’t be here.
We would be protesting for justice.”
“It’s very sad that a young black man is dead in this country,” said Rev. Michael J. Dickerson, a New Orleans pastor who was among those at the demonstration.
“I am very sad for this young man and his family.
I know his father was in shock and I pray that his spirit will not be disturbed by these senseless acts.”
Police said in a statement that they “did not have to resort to deadly force to protect the lives of other citizens, as the suspect was attempting to use deadly force in the commission of a felony”.
“The use of deadly force is the only appropriate response for a suspect who is unlawfully in our city,” the statement read.
The NYPD said in an email that officers “responded with deadly force when a suspect with a firearm approached an officer who had just arrived on scene.
The suspect fled and was captured at a nearby apartment building.
He is currently in custody without incident.”
A video of the incident posted on YouTube showed the young man, dressed in black, running from the police.
The video, which showed police using tear gas and pepper spray on protesters, went viral on Saturday night.
