The FBI fired James Comey in the midst of the 2016 presidential election.
He was the acting FBI director, but his firing was quickly followed by the appointment of the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate Russia’s interference in the election and whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
In a letter to the committee, Comey said he “could not support the recommendations of a special counsel appointed by the Department of Justice to investigate Russian election interference.”
(In a press conference Thursday, Comey also defended his actions.)
“I could not support your recommendations, and I hope you can see your way clear to letting me go,” Comey wrote in the letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.
Comey’s firing was one of the most controversial in recent history.
Trump, who had publicly criticized the FBI’s investigation into his campaign’s connections to Russia, said he would appoint a special prosecutor to lead the probe.
But Trump later said he did not want Comey to stay on in his job.
Comey left the FBI in late May after the bureau opened an investigation into whether there had been collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
He left the bureau in late June.
In an interview with NBC News in early September, Comey reiterated his argument that he did nothing wrong.
“I had a duty to do what was right, and that’s what I did,” he said.
“The American people should know that.
I’m not going to apologize for what I believe in.”
But Trump has denied any collusion between his campaign and the Russian government, and in a recent interview with CNN, Trump said, “I never knew that there was any collusion.
There is no collusion.
Nobody has any collusion.”
The White House later said Comey’s decision to resign did not affect the probe of Russia.
Comey had faced criticism for his handling of the investigation into Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.
In July, a former Justice Department official told The New York Times that Comey was “an agent of the Kremlin.”
Trump has said the Russia investigation is a political witch hunt and that he does not have any ties to the Russian Federation.
