Posted April 14, 2018 10:22:53A gunman opens fire inside a crowded strip club in Las Vegas, killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 500 others.
At the time of the shooting, it was unclear whether the shooter was motivated by religious or political beliefs.
In a statement, President Donald Trump said the gunman was an American patriot who was seeking to protect his country and that his actions were a tragedy.
“The Las Vegas gunman was motivated to carry out this act of violence because he was deeply disturbed by the treatment of Muslims in the United States, and because he wanted to inflict harm on our countrymen,” Trump said in the statement.
“This man has shown us so much grief and pain that we will never, ever forget.
He was a coward.
We will never stop grieving for his life.”
The gunman, identified by the FBI as Stephen Paddock, was known to police for a series of violent incidents including domestic violence and armed robbery.
Authorities said he opened fire from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino on the popular Las Vegas strip, where he killed 58 people and injured more than 5,500 others.
“I know we are all in pain,” MGM Resorts International CEO Steve Wynn said at a news conference Tuesday morning.
“I know there are some people who are not in pain.
And I am in pain myself.”
A gunman opened fire inside the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 people, injuring more and wounding more than five times as many at the resort’s iconic Mesquite hotel, on April 1, 2018.
The gunman opened a fire at the Mandalays resort and casino in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Tuesday, April 1.
Authorities say he killed himself.
Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said authorities were looking into Paddock’s motive.
“There’s no question in my mind he was in it for himself,” Lombardo told reporters at a press conference.
“There was no other reason for him to do it.
This is a sad day.””
There are indications he may have been radicalized by some other terrorist group or terrorist group affiliated group, or there may be some other motivation,” he added.
Authorities found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound outside the Mandalayan Bay Hotel and casino.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada.
He was killed by SWAT officers who entered the hotel in the early morning hours of April 2.
The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, with more than 58,000 people killed in the U.K., France, Germany, Belgium and Italy.
The deadliest mass shootings occurred in Oregon, in January 2017, when a gunman opened fires at a Planned Parenthood clinic killing nine people and wounding 13.
The shooter also killed two people at a music festival in Las Vegias, Nevada, and a group of people at the country music festival of Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado, on February 6, 2018, respectively.
