The owner of a Texas shooting course is defending his business after police in Austin say a gun theft was committed by one of his students.
The incident happened in August and was caught on surveillance cameras.
In a letter to Austin police, Joe Stilwell said he didn’t have an incentive to steal a gun from his students, but he didn, either.
“I was very naive to think that I was the only person who had access to this firearm,” he wrote.
Stilweld said the theft was “just the act of someone taking my equipment.”
“I am so ashamed that my staff members took it,” he said.
Police said they were able to identify the suspect as a student at the course.
Stolwell said they are working with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate the incident.
He said the students who stole the gun had been suspended and are now on administrative leave.
