Shooting star casinos in New Jersey, California and New Mexico are closing their doors as police investigate a suspected gunman who fired shots in the air and injured several people, including a man who was shot in the head.
The shooting at Shooting Star Casino in New York City, where police say a gunman opened fire in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25, was the third mass shooting in less than a week in the United States.
Authorities said the gunman was shot by police in a parking lot at the resort’s gaming floor.
The suspect, who was later killed by police, was described as a white man in his 20s who was dressed in all black.
Police identified the suspect as James James Alex Fields Jr., a 30-year-old from Ohio.
The Associated Press has not identified him.
“At this time, we do not have a motive for this crime.
We are still investigating this case, but we do know the suspect was armed and we have a witness who was with him at the time of the incident,” the New York Police Department said in a statement.
The shooter has been identified as a 21-year old man from Ohio, who authorities said was shot after entering the parking lot of Shooting Star on the Strip.
A woman who was injured in the shooting was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.
Police did not release her name.
Police said the suspect then exited a dark-colored, four-door sedan that was parked outside the casino and began shooting in the parking lots.
A witness said he saw a man shoot the gunman, according to The Associated the New Jersey Star-Ledger newspaper.
The police officer who was wounded in the gunfire was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
He was released but had been treated for minor injuries.
A witness told police that a man drove up and started shooting, firing in the direction of the officers.
The witness said the man got out of the vehicle and shot the officer, according a New Jersey police report.
Police say a woman was shot and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
