There are no official figures, but anecdotal evidence indicates that as many as half of the approximately 30,000 Denver shootings reported to the Denver Police Department between 2010 and 2013 occurred in the city’s parks, outdoor spaces and residential areas.
“The park and recreational shooting is one of the most prevalent shootings,” said Denver Public Schools spokesman Scott Ritchie.
“That’s where you’ll find most of the victims.”
Ritchie said the shooting numbers are an estimate and that he could not offer any numbers on the number of people shot or injured in these shootings.
He said that shooting is often a case of a person being distracted, not fully aware of what’s going on around them, and that the majority of shootings occur when a person is distracted.
He said the number could change when police receive information that a shooting was committed by a suspected shooter, but that would depend on the information received.
According to Ritchie, most of these shootings take place in the parks, but he added that he would not call it a “majority” of shootings because “it’s possible there are people that have shot themselves or have been injured by other people shooting at them.”
“The majority of the shootings are in parks and recreational areas,” Ritchie said.
“It’s not an uncommon occurrence, and there is always a need to maintain public safety,” Ritzer said.
A spokesperson for the Denver Public School system said the district received information from the police department about three shooting incidents in the Denver-area parks between April and June of this year.
The shooting was reported at the Lincoln Park area on April 6 and in the Roosevelt Park area the same day on April 13.
The spokesperson said that the shootings were reported by the school district to the police, and it was determined that all three incidents involved “a male in his 20s or early 30s” shooting himself.
The shootings took place in parks where there were at least 20 shooting incidents a year, Ritzer noted.
The spokesman said that this is a “very rare event” in the district, and the shootings have a “devastating” effect on the public safety.
“We take our responsibilities seriously, and are working with law enforcement on the investigations into this incident,” the spokesperson said.
Ritchie described these shootings as “the number one threat to public safety in our city.”
“We know that people do not leave our city when they are in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.
“We know people will do what they have to do to protect themselves and others.
It’s unfortunate when we have these tragedies, and we understand that people are fearful, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”
According to the spokesman, a “large percentage” of the shooting victims are children.
“They are not the ones who do this to themselves, they’re not the people who are most likely to be victims, but they are the people in the neighborhood,” Ritz said.
He added that it’s important to maintain awareness and encourage children to stay away from the area and stay at home if they’re alone.
