Police have been forced to scramble after a man was shot by a sniper while he was on duty in the state of South Africa.
According to local news outlet News24, the unnamed man was on his way to work when a bullet from a police sniper hit him.
The bullet ricocheted off his chest, and he died at the scene.
The man’s name is being withheld to protect his family’s privacy.
A police spokesperson told News24 that a preliminary investigation revealed that the sniper fired on the man after he approached them, but that the man had a valid firearm permit.
The police are still investigating.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, News24 reported.
The incident is not the first time South Africa has seen a shooting on duty.
In 2016, a man fired at a group of men who were being chased by police.
The bullet did not hit anyone, but it was a bad day for the police.
