White + neon photoshoot

a pop of fluor

Posted on May 19th, 2013

Since the spring of last year neon colors are hard to miss. Suddenly they popped up everywhere you looked. In fashion, in graphics and in interior design. I thought this was going to be the kind of trend that would last only one season, but I was wrong! Neon & fluorescent colors are still a hit. With one big difference from last year though: now neon & fluor are used more as bright popping accents. And I like it a lot like this!

So, it was a lot of fun styling this photo shoot I did with Dorothy from Visagie Doro T and Anna-Marie Janssen. I hunted for white garments with a minimalistic feel, to combine with colorful accessories, while Dorothy spiced things up with flashy neon accents in the make up. I love the clean, crisp atmosphere Anna-Marie so perfectly captured.

Cinemagraphs by Jamie Beck & Kevin Burg

Posted on January 22nd, 2013

The ones amongst you who are interested in photography might have heard about this phenomenon a long time ago: cinemagraphs, invented & developed by photographer Jamie Beck & animator Kevin Burg (now husband & wife). Otherwise described as “moving photos”, or animated GIF’s. They cover the area between photos & videos, as they are still photographs in which a minor, repeated movement occurs. I have experimented with an animated GIF once myself, just for the fun of it (click here), but obviously these cinemagraphs are of a whole other caliber! I’m absolutely mesmerised by them.

Not sure if I should tell you this, but the only thing that comes to my mind when seeing these shoes, is: …haaaaa-lle-lu-jah…. ;)

Whether it’s hair or clothing hit by a slight breeze or dangling jewelry swaying back & forth, the calculated action serves a purpose in adding to the mood & aesthetic. This is how Kevin & Jamie describe their cinemagraphs themselves: ”A Cinemagraph is an image that contains within itself a living moment that allows a glimpse of time to be experienced & preserved endlessly.” View more cinemagraphs on their website, or on Jamie Becks’ blog From Me To You. ∗

Madrid

Posted on October 25th, 2012

A while back I visited Madrid for the first time with my two girls Claudia & Floor. Floor lives in the south of Spain (she speaks Spanish fluently - what keeps amazing me every time I hear her speak it) and Claudia lives in The Netherlands, and we decided to meet up in Madrid. I’m a fan of Barcelona & Malaga already, so I was very curious to see what Madrid has to offer. These three cities all have their own unique atmosphere, but in a way you can compare Barcelona & Madrid to one another, because they both offer a wide range of beautiful shops, great restaurants & a lot of culture. Having said that, the vibe in each city is totally different. Madrid – to me - came across like a true metropolis compared to Barcelona & Malaga. It’s got a lively and vibrant buzz going on and this city comes even more to live at night. It’s the perfect destination for a city trip, especially one with girlfriends!

This photo is taken at my favorite neighborhood of Madrid: Chueca. It’s known as the gay district and it is the hippest part of Madrid. During the day this is where you need to be for shopping, but there are also some interesting art galleries to visit. At night this is where the most extravagant parties take place.

A great place for a quick snack or a complete meal: Mercado San Antón, located in Chueca. You can pick small bites at various stands. Everything is freshly made. If you choose to eat here, you should definitely pick a seat on the roof terrace!

Vintage shopping at the El Rastro market on Sunday mornings. This is an extremely large outdoor flea market with antiques, clothes & to be honest, a lot of junk too. But there are some great vintage shops to be found as well. For example Vintage 4P, or Reno. I still regret not buying the silver candle holder…

The impressive Almudena Cathedral.

Madrid’s largest shopping district: Gran Vía.

A great place to relax by lying on the grass or floating away for a bit in a rowing boat: the beautiful Park Retiro.

And off course some classic tourist photos as well… :) ∗

Florence

Posted on October 16th, 2012

I think this rainy day is the perfect day to look back on my sunny trip to Florence last summer. I already told you how I fell head over heels in love with Tuscany this year. Florence was one of the absolute high lights of our trip. It has a little bit of everything, or actually a whole lot of culture, beautiful shops, delicious food & breathtaking views. I’m telling you, Florence will not let you down!

On the left the gorgeous Dome. Unfortunately we didn’t see it on the inside, because the queue was way too long. If you want to visit Il Duomo you should go as early as you can.

The best iced cappuccino we drank at Chiaroscuro, which is also a great address for “aperitivo”. This is a nice way of tasting different kinds of small appetizers, but it can even be your meal if you’re not a big eater. Italians have aperitivo after work and before they have their main course. If you order wine or a cocktail you can grab a bite with it (for free). Often the whole bar functions as a display for all kinds of yummy bites. And you should definitely also try the ice cream of Grom!

Florence is full of cute little shops with the most beautiful stationery, diaries & notebooks.

Shopping at Bottega Quattro & ottod’Ame.

On the right: Marilyn Monroe exhibition at the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo. The shoes alone were enough reason to have a look inside though!

Seriously, the BEST meal we EVER had was at trattoria / osteria Zá-Zá! Thanks to a tip of my friend Mischa (thanks again, Mies!). Make sure to book a table in advance if you plan on going to eat here! ∗

Beautiful Tuscany

Posted on September 6th, 2012

Finally - I finished the photo book of our vacation in Italy this week. I always try to make a book of our summer holiday. Those are practically the only photos I have printed. Everything else I store digitally but I really love flipping through a real photo album once in a while.

It was my first time in Tuscany and I have fallen for Italy - big time! The food, the people, the scenery, the atmosphere, it was all pure enjoyment. This is a teeny tiny selection of my photographs just to give you an impression of the beauty Tuscany has to offer. And I will write a post solely on Florence soon simply because Florence is worth a whole separate post, let me tell you! It has made it to my top 3 of favorite cities, after New York & Barcelona. But maybe I should make a top 5, because now I think of it I can’t leave out London & Copenhagen when speaking of favorite cities!

Oh well, there are just too many beautiful places and too little time to go see them all… But if you ever wonder where to go, Tuscany is always a good idea.

What’s your favorite holiday destination? ∗
